Why Washington Football Team’s new name won’t be RedWolves or Wolves

The Washington marmots?

The Washington Football Team announced Tuesday that its saga of years of deciding on a new name will come to an end on February 2, Groundhog Day, when it will announce a new name for the team, possibly replacing the nickname “Washington Football Team.” used since early 2020.

Unfortunately for fans waiting for “Red Wolves” or “Wolves,” Washington also announced that it will not change the name to either option.

This is why:

Why Washington’s Soccer Team Won’t Be ‘RedWolves’

While “RedWolves” was a popular choice among fans to replace “Washington Football Team,” team president Jason Wright announced on January 4 that the organization would not opt for the name due to potential “legal hurdles.”

Here is the statement:

At first we understood that wolves, or some variation of them, were one of our fan favorites. As I’ve said all along, we take our fans’ feedback very seriously, and because of their interest in this name, we’ve included Wolves in a list of options to explore further. However, once we started investigating the Wolves, we realized a notable challenge: the trademarks of other teams would limit our ability to make the name our own. And without Wolves, variations like RedWolves wouldn’t have been viable either for these and other reasons.

By understanding the weight and importance of our team name and the enthusiasm for other naming options, both internally and within our fanbase, we didn’t want to risk taking a path that could be fraught with legal hurdles. The prospect of years of litigation was not something we wanted you, our fans, to have to endure when starting to adopt a new brand.

In short, the name is already registered as a trademark. The preferred choice reported by the team was “RedWolves”, but the name was already owned in July 2020.

With “RedWolves” and “Wolves” now available, there are several options still on the table, including “Commanders”, “Defenders”, “Armada” and “Redhogs”.

Don’t worry though, fan: “Groundhogs” probably won’t make the cut. Probably.
