Premier League table: Updated 2022 EPL standings and Champions League, relegation & title races

The Premier League is considered by many to be the strongest and most difficult league in the world and the 2021-22 season remains in form, with places in the table highly contested.

Although marred by COVID-19 disruptions, the racing is compelling. Man City have taken the lead with a commanding lead, but Liverpool (and possibly Chelsea) can still make a run in the second half of the season. The Reds appear to be the most likely challenger to stand in the way of Pep Guardiola’s fourth title in the last five seasons.

Other finishes in the table are just as important, with teams battling for Champions League and European places while others battle to avoid relegation. A snapshot of each race follows below.

Premier League title race

they currently hold a 10-point lead at the top of the Premier League table, and five thirty eight has the Citizens within 87 per cent of winning the Premier League title after beating Chelsea in the blockbuster clash on January 15.

However, he can still make things interesting if City mess up. Liverpool now sit 11 points behind and still have a game in hand, while Chelsea have work to do to recover.

Outside of these three, no other team has a realistic chance of winning the Premier League title, as it would take a catastrophic collapse of several major teams to see West Ham, Arsenal, Spurs and Manchester United in the mix.

Champions League places: Top 4 chase

The Champions League race (there are only four places available and they go to the top four teams in the table) is probably the most fascinating, as several teams are in the mix and only four can get through.

Man City, Chelsea and Liverpool seem to have a tendency to finish comfortably in the top four, as FiveThirtyEight puts each of them over 90 per cent to secure a place in next season’s Champions League.

The fourth and last place is the one that everyone has in their sights. They are currently in fourth place thanks to a terrific start to the season, but the Hammers slipped a bit in late November and early December. Now and both are within four points, and although they are six points away from that final spot, the Red Devils have games to play.

five thirty eightIn fact, Arsenal’s predictions are more likely to snatch that place, at 41 per cent, while Tottenham are at 34 per cent, West Ham at 11 per cent and United at just 10 per cent. Ralf Rangnick has a lot of work to do.

Premier League race for European berths

As well as the Champions League, there are two Europa League places up for grabs: one for the team in fifth place in the Premier League and the other for the FA Cup winner. There is also a place in the Europa Conference League that goes to the winner of the League Cup.

However, if the FA Cup or League Cup winners have already qualified for the Champions League or Europa League by other means, the place automatically allocated to the cup winner is transferred to the next highest ranked team. Premier League qualification that has not yet qualified. a European competition. In that scenario, finishing fifth, sixth or seventh could mean a place in Europe.

So, until there is clarity with the cup scenarios, we will assume that the fifth, sixth and seventh are in contention for European places. And with, , and everyone having games in hand, that would give them an edge over everyone else for those spots.

Battle for relegation from the Premier League

Premier League revenue streams are astronomical in world football, so absorbing relegation from the English top flight is an expensive proposition. The teams fight as hard as possible to avoid the last three places and avoid suffering this fate.

With the last four teams within three points, the relegation race is wide open.

For long stretches this season it seemed they would almost certainly be headed for relegation, but following a manager change and a strong result against Everton, the Canaries are just one point from safety.

, under new ownership, is already spending big to improve the team in the January transfer window with plenty of time to score points.

Things are not looking good for him, especially with star forward Chris Wood making the move to Tyneside. But their many games in hand give the Clarets a fighting chance.

Watford are also a contender, while they are in a much more advantageous position with a significant gap below, but they have found themselves lost at times this season and any prolonged slip-up would see them sucked into the vortex. Everton fans especially know there is no room for error as they have parted ways with manager Rafa Benítez as the Toffees continue to stumble.
