Liverpool vs. Newcastle live score, updates, highlights from EPL, Matchday 17

Liverpool will look to keep up with Premier League leaders Manchester City when the Reds host Newcastle at Anfield on Thursday.

The pressure is on the Reds to match Man City, who have won seven in a row. Liverpool (second, 37 points) are just four points behind and have a five-match Premier League win streak of their own since November’s shocking loss to West Ham, the Reds’ only loss in their league season so far.

At the other end of the table, Eddie Howe may have only four games in his tenure as Newcastle’s manager, but there is a real sense of urgency given they are locked in a relegation battle and are coming off a 4-0 beating at in the hands of Leicester City. Still, the Magpies (19th, 10 points) have won four points from four games under Howe, a decent loot considering the club was at six points, all on draws, in the 12 games before his signing. They are three points from the safe zone entering the game.

Sporting News will follow the game live and provide score updates, commentary and highlights as they happen.

Here’s a player who would love to get in on the scoring action. The six games without goal or assist are in all competitions.

Liverpool are scoring today, right? The only question is how many:

Liverpool vs. Newcastle lineups

Only Nat Phillips, Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott are confirmed injured for Liverpool. Divock Origi and Roberto Firmino have been missing time lately, but both have returned to training and could be available for the national team, although probably as substitutes. We’ll see if Jurgen Klopp represents any player, potentially Mo Salah, who has played every minute this year.

Alisson (GK) – Robertson, Van Dijk, Matip, Alexander-Arnold – Fabinho, Henderson, Keita – Mane, Jota, Salah

(Starting lineups are posted one hour before kick-off)

Paul Dummett is the only injured Magpie, who has yet to appear this season thanks to a long-lasting calf injury. With Ciaran Clark back from suspension, Newcastle could revert to a five-man defense line Howe used earlier this season. If he opts for that formation, Matt Ritchie will have another look, which would likely see Jamal Lewis fall to the bench.

Dubravka (GK) – Clark, Lascelles, Schar – Ritchie, Willock, Shelvey, Manquillo – Saint-Maximin, Wilson, Joelinton

(Starting lineups are posted one hour before kick-off)

Bookies are looking for a blast on this one, and it’s understandable. Liverpool have wiped out just about everyone in their path this season … until recently.

The Reds fell to West Ham in early November, and some weaknesses have emerged since then. They bounced back wonderfully, putting up four goals past Arsenal, Southampton and Everton, but have notched up a pair of 1-0 wins in their last two games against defensively strong teams at Wolves and Aston Villa.

Newcastle cannot claim to classify itself as “defensively robust” as the Magpies have not kept a single clean sheet all season in the Premier League. Still, this could be a chance for Klopp to rest some tired legs. However, it seems possible to tap into bettors’ love for Liverpool and to seize some positive odds in favor of Newcastle keeping things close, while Liverpool are expected to take all three points.

Supporting Mohamed Salah also seems ideal, with the Egyptian in spectacular form. Salah has scored or assisted a goal in every Premier League game this season, except for one since August. His goalscorer odds at any point are worthless, but the first goalscorer odds seem attractive enough, especially if Klopp re-selects Oxlade-Chamberlain as center forward. If Jota returns to the lineup, he will also be up to the task, having scored six goals in his last eight starts.
