Bruce Arians rips ref who flagged Tom Brady for unsportsmanlike conduct: ‘Totally uncalled for’

Bruce Arians throws the challenge flag on Shawn Hochuli.

A bloodied Tom Brady earned the first unsportsmanlike conduct penalty of his career in the Buccaneers’ NFC divisional loss to the Rams on Sunday, much to the chagrin of the Tampa Bay coach.

Speaking on his Buccaneers Radio Network show, Arians addressed Hochuli for the flag.

“Totally out of line,” Arians said. “I don’t think any other umpire in the league would have thrown the flag.”

While this can generally be filed as “coach defending his player”, Arians may have a point: Hochuli has come under fire for his apparent tendency to steal the spotlight in games he’s officiating, which was no exception with the Buccaneers-Rams matchup on Sunday. .

Hochuli explained the flag on Brady after the game.

“He looked me in the face aggressively and used abusive language,” Hochuli said.

Brady, the notorious trash talker, had never before been singled out for taunting or unsportsmanlike conduct in his career, even in 2021 when the league put an emphasis on taunting. He says that he didn’t curse Hochuli before the flag.

The Bucs quarterback took issue with officials who missed an alleged rough call to the passer when Rams pass rusher Von Miller hit Brady in the chin with his helmet. Hochuli said the call didn’t rise to the level of roughing the passer.

A reminder of sports rules: Usually when you know the name of a referee, that’s never a good thing.
